MusicMatch – Interview with Martin Seidel

MusicMatch – Interview with Martin Seidel

As part of the MusicMatch Festival we are happy to welcome singer-songwriter Martin Seidel. Don´t miss out his performance on saturday at 20:00 at the Blue Note.

Beforehand we could reach Martin for a brief interview and asked him seven questions. What he told us? Read for yourself!

1. When and how occured your passion for music?
I was practically raised with it. In my early childhood my mother always sang with me and let me listen to vinyl records. The music has always been there. But it got really serious when I started to take singing lessons and founded my first band. Since I started my solo program my passion has only grown stronger.

2. Your new solo album is called “Comin´ Home”. What do you want to express with the title and the songs?
The title has a triple function: For one thing “Comin´Home” is the first song I wrote with the intention to start with my solo carreer one day, further it is the cover track of the album and thirdly it is the opening song as well. Everything started with this song and after many years that I played in several bands I finally get back to it, I am literally “coming home”. The songs of this album show my development as songwriter and thematise personal issues, my experiences and thougths that I want to share this way.

3. Your life without music would be …
Freely adapted from Nietzsche: a mistake.

4. What are your biggest influences or idols?
There are so many that I can´t really name one because I am not directly aware of them. The world is crowded by great songs and singers and we get more every day … When I hear good music which reaches my soul it influences and inspires me automatically. Wether this might be Folk, Soul, Bluegrass, Jazz or Black Metal doesn´t matter at all.

5. Do you have particular rituals before a concert? If so, which ones?
I change. Mostly I have a clean shirt with me to wear at the performance. I´m kind of skimming over the performance situation (and afterwards off again). Apart from that I try not to drink too much alcohol so I don´t forget all my texts.

6. What attracted you from the spa town of Bad Schlema in the Ore Mountains to Dresden?
We have to change this question. I was born in Schlema, but I grew up in Zschorlau. Therefore:
6. What attracted you from Zschorlau in the Ore Mountains to Dresden?
I moved here to study and somehow got stuck in this city. Meanwhile I´ve settled down, I am “well connected”, as they say nowadays. Dresden is a fantastic city with great development opportunities for artists and musicians, and I try to make the most of that for myself. Besides, it isn´t excessively far from hom either so I can be there in about one and a half hour if necessary.

7. Tell us a musician´s joke!
There are so many funny ones. These are my favorites:
What’s a drummer doing at the Postplatz? He waits for the one…
What is the difference between a trampoline and a banjo? – Before you jump around on the trampoline, you take off your shoes…

We are happily looking forward to Martin Seidel´s performance at the MusicMatch Festival!

MusicMatch – Interview with I Want Poetry

MusicMatch – Interview with I Want Poetry

As part of the MusicMatch Festival we will welcome I Want Poetry on stage at Blue Note on saturday at 21:30. Beforehand we could reach Tine and Till Moritz for a short interview and asked them eight questions. What they told us? Read for yourself!

When and how occured your passion for music?
The music has always been there and comes from deep inside. Like a home we carry within us, where we are happy.

How did you chose your bandname “I Want Poetry”?
The name is a quotation by Aldous Huxley out of his book “Brave New World”: “But I don´t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness, I want sin.”
So speaks someone who is only called “the savage” by everybody in the book – because he is different and values freedom more than comfort. This desire to live unconditionally with all up- and downsides inspires us and expresses everything we wish for our lifes. Yes, we want art, we want individualism, we want to feel and dream. We want adventure, courage and love!

What makes your music unique and what inspires you to write songs?
For us it is always a wonder where the songs come from. But when we invite them, they show up. Often the melodies itself tell us their stories, mostly they are about being human: How do we treat each other and ourselves, what motivates us? We are a lot on tour and always experience new, marvelous and exciting encounters. This is what inspires us.

Which song are you proud of most?
Our songs are like children, you can´t really favor one – each has its own character. Important to us is that they don´t stay at home like delegated on a platform. They want to explore the world, want to be played and heard. Because together with the audience they evolve a special magic. Therefore we are looking forward to our performance at MusicMatch and afterwards to our first tour in Switzerland in may.

A life without music would be …
Music has always been our life.

How do you describe your victory at the German Rock & Pop Award?
After the nomination of our album TALES it was a huge surprise to be invited in the main category “Best Alternative Band” as well. When we performed in the final we were only two persons with a piano between hundred fantastic bands – that the jury chose us for the first place was extremely exciting.

How did you find each other?
How it always happens: The right things come to you when you expect them the least. I had just moved to Dresden when I coincidantally read an announcement in the newspapers. It simply said “singer searches songwriter” but suddenly I had goosebumps. This was the moment I knew: That is it.

When we met for the first time we hit it off right away and already started writing the first songs together. We both knew: This encounter changes everything. This is something you experience only once in a lifetime.

Do you have particular rituals before a concert? If so, which ones?
Approximately 20 minutes before arises an uncontainable joy – we love to play live.

We are excitedly looking forward to the performance of I Want Poetry at the MusicMatch Festival!

MusicMatch 2016 – Short Review

175 participants of the conference, about 1250 guest at the festival… MusicMatch was not only a success considering the numbers. From 29.04 to 01.05.2016 it was the first time there was an event in Saxony that dedicated itself to pop music regarding theoretical and practical things.

At 11 conference panels exciting topics came up: music assistance through airplay on the radio, marketing of artist, transnational cultural exchange… The panel discussions that were full of high-quality people made it possible to get an interesting insight on an artistic as well as economic and cultural political level.

The festival concerts happened in seven clubs, on eight stages showed a very active and productive regional music scene. 28 bands conjured a smile on the audience’s faces when being on stage and some surprise will really stay in lots of memories. Talking about a second time would be too early now, but there definitely is a chance! We are delighted about this successful weekend and are thanking all the partners, artists, sponsors and curious guest who made a go of this weekend!
